Quick picks

In short

Most visitors fill a week with one boat day (Safari Blue, Mnemba or Prison Island), a morning in Stone Town with a spice farm, and one fly-in safari to the mainland. Pick trips that start near your hotel, and check the tide for anything with a sandbank or a lagoon.

Plan by where you stay

Zanzibar's roads are slow, so the best trips are often the ones that start near your hotel.

Base Easy half-days Worth the longer drive
Stone Town Stone Town walk, Prison Island and Nakupenda, spice farm, sunset dhow Safari Blue from Fumba
North (Nungwi, Kendwa) Mnemba snorkelling, sunset dhow, quad, jet ski and horses Stone Town and a spice farm in one day
North-east (Matemwe, Kiwengwa) Mnemba snorkelling, diving Stone Town, Jozani
East and south (Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi) Jozani, Kuza Cave and The Rock, kite lessons Kizimkazi dolphins, Safari Blue

Fly-in safaris leave from the airport near Stone Town, and the airport transfers and Dar ferry page covers getting around.

On the water

Safari Blue is a full day on a dhow in Menai Bay: snorkelling, a sandbank, a swim in a mangrove lagoon and a seafood lunch. Many copies use the same name, so check who runs the trip. Mnemba Atoll is the island's best-known snorkelling spot; half-day boats look for dolphins on the way. Prison Island (Changuu) has giant tortoises and is usually paired with the Nakupenda sandbank. For calm water with no snorkelling, a Blue Lagoon trip or a sunset dhow is simpler. Divers have Mnemba, and Nungwi, Chumbe and Pemba are further out.

On land

Stone Town (Mji Mkongwe) is best on foot with a guide in the morning, before the heat. Cover shoulders and knees in the old town. Spice farms are a short drive inland and often come as a combined day with Stone Town and Prison Island. Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the place for red colobus monkeys, and it is on the way to the south and east coast.

Safaris from the island

The mainland parks are close enough for a day trip by plane. Compare Mikumi and Nyerere on 1-day safari from Zanzibar, or stay a night or two with a 2–3 day safari.

Questions people ask

How many days do I need in Zanzibar?
Five to seven days covers one boat trip, Stone Town and a spice farm, Jozani forest and a day safari, with beach days in between. Add one or two nights if you want a 2–3 day safari on the mainland.
What is the best time to visit Zanzibar for tours?
The drier months between the rains. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority puts the long rains in March–May and the short rains in October–December; boat trips and safari flights are the trips most affected by rain.
Do tides matter for Zanzibar trips?
Yes. Sandbank stops such as Nakupenda and the sandbank on Safari Blue are best around low tide, and on the east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi) the lagoon empties at low tide, so swimming from the beach depends on the time of day. Good operators set the departure time by the tide.
Where do the boat trips leave from?
Safari Blue starts at Fumba in the south-west, Prison Island and Nakupenda boats leave from Stone Town, and Mnemba trips leave from the north and north-east coast (Kendwa, Nungwi, Matemwe). Many listings include hotel pickup; check the pickup area before you book.
Are Zanzibar dolphin tours ethical?
It depends on the boat. At Kizimkazi and Mnemba, many boats chase dolphin groups and drop swimmers on top of them. Choose a trip that watches from a distance, does not chase, and lets the dolphins come to you, and never touch them.
Can I do a safari from Zanzibar in a day?
Yes, by plane. Day trips fly to Mikumi or Nyerere National Park in about 30–60 minutes and bring you back to your hotel by about 17:00–18:30.
