What you see on Changuu
Changuu, better known as Prison Island, lies about 5.6 km north-west of Stone Town, a 25–30 minute boat ride from the seafront. The main reason to go is the tortoise sanctuary. Giant Aldabra tortoises, a species from the Seychelles, live in the sanctuary, and some are more than a hundred years old. Guides let you feed them by hand.
The rest of the island is small and easy to walk. The prison was built under British rule but never used as one; the island later served as a quarantine station, and you can walk through the ruins. Peacocks and other animals wander the island, and there is a small beach for a swim if your tour allows the time. Most combined tours give you about an hour here, which is enough.
Adding Nakupenda sandbank
Nakupenda is a bare strip of white sand a short boat ride from Changuu. On most combined tours you spend around three hours there: swimming, snorkelling from the sand and eating a seafood barbecue with fruit. It is the part most people remember.
Because it is a bare sandbank, Nakupenda changes with the tide. At high tide there is less sand; on rough days the crew may cut the swim. Bring a hat, sunscreen and something to cover up, because the sun reflects off the sand and water all afternoon.
Which version to book
| Option | Length | What it adds | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prison Island only | ≈ 2–3 h | Tortoises and ruins | Island fee, often paid on site |
| Prison Island + Nakupenda | ≈ 6 h | Sandbank, snorkel, barbecue | Island and conservation fees |
| With a Stone Town walking tour | ≈ 7–8 h | The old town in the same day | A long, hot day; pace yourself |
| Private boat | flexible | Your own timing and stops | Price per boat vs per person |
| From the north coast | ≈ 6.5 h+ | Pickup in Nungwi or Kendwa | ≈ 1 h+ drive each way |
The cheapest shared listings are cheap partly because fees are not in the price. Compare the total price, not the headline figure: a slightly dearer listing with "entry fees included" can cost less on the day.
Fees and cash
We could not verify an official entrance or conservation fee for Changuu from a government source, and listings name different amounts. Treat any figure on a listing as that operator's estimate. Snorkel gear is included on many shared tours but offered for rent on some private ones, another small cost to check. Most shared tours collect these fees in cash, either at the boat or at the island, so carry US dollars or Tanzanian shillings in small notes.
The boats leave from the Stone Town seafront, so the trip fits well with a night or two in the old town. Pair it with a Stone Town walking tour or a spice farm visit on another day, or end the evening on a sunset dhow from the same beach.
