Zanzibar tour operators and safari companies

Local agencies and DMCs · the original Safari Blue · fly-in safari specialists · platforms vs booking direct

In short

Most Zanzibar excursions are run by small local agencies, and the website or beach seller you pay is often a reseller, not the company that owns the boat or vehicle. Check the supplier's name, look it up on the ZATO member list, and book through a channel that gives you written terms and a way to get your money back.

Who actually runs a Zanzibar excursion

A Zanzibar day trip usually passes through two or three hands. A local agency or boat owner runs the trip. A reseller sells it: a hotel desk, a beach seller, a tour rep or an online platform. The two big destination management companies (DMCs) also handle transfers, hotels and excursions for foreign tour operators.

On GetYourGuide and Headout, the platform is not the operator. Both say in their terms that your contract is with the supplier who runs the trip. The supplier's name is shown on the listing and on your voucher. That is the company to check.

How to check an operator

  • ZATO member list. The Zanzibar Association of Tour Operators publishes its members on its own site. When we checked, it listed 146 companies, including ZanTours and Colors of Zanzibar. Mainland safari companies based in Arusha or Moshi are not ZATO members. For them, look for TATO, the mainland association.
  • The supplier name on the listing. Look it up and compare it with the name on your voucher.
  • Brand names. "Safari Blue" is a trade name of one company at Fumba, but many other boats use it. See Safari Blue: the original and the copies.
  • A written itinerary. It should give the pickup time, what is included (park or conservation fees, lunch, transfers) and the cancellation deadline.

Questions people ask

What is ZATO?
The Zanzibar Association of Tour Operators, a membership body founded in 1993 and based in Mazizini. It publishes its member list on its own website, and membership is open to registered tour operators and travel agencies.
Does ZATO membership mean an operator is good?
It shows the company is a registered tour operator that applied and was accepted by the board. It does not rate trips, so still read recent reviews and the itinerary.
Should I book excursions with my holiday rep or locally?
Package-holiday reps usually sell trips run by a local ground handler. Compare the itinerary, group size and price with the same trip on a booking platform, and check what each one lets you cancel.
Is it safe to book with a beach seller?
It can be, but you often pay in cash and may not know which company runs the boat. Ask for the company name, a written itinerary and a receipt before you pay.
Who is liable if something goes wrong on a platform booking?
The supplier who runs the trip. GetYourGuide's and Headout's terms both say your contract is with the supplier, while the platform handles payment, changes and refunds within its rules.
