The four compared
| Activity | Where | Length | Price basis | What sets the time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quad tour | Nungwi, Kendwa, Kiwengwa, Matemwe | 2–4 h | Per quad or per person | Heat; sunset tours in late afternoon |
| Jet ski | Nungwi and Kendwa beaches | 15, 30 or 60 min | Per jet ski | Sea state; beach chosen by the weather |
| Kitesurf lesson | Paje lagoon, east coast | ≈ 2 h per lesson | Per person, private or 2 per instructor | Wind season and tide |
| Horse ride | Beach rides from a stable | ≈ 30 min riding | Per person | Tide and wind for the swim |
None of these needs a full day, so they fit between boat trips. Many include pickup in their own area and charge extra for pickup from the rest of the island.
Quad tours in the north
The most-booked quad tours start in Nungwi or Kendwa. After a safety briefing and an introduction to the quad, you ride behind a guide on quiet roads to two beaches (Kendwa and Kaskazini on the top-rated route) and stop in a village, where residents talk about daily life and crafts. Fruit and soft drinks are included, and many operators take photos for you. Expect about 4 hours from start to finish. Shorter 1–2 hour loops exist, and some tours run on the north-east coast near Kiwengwa, or end at sunset.
Group size matters more than the quad. The same tour can be booked private (up to 4 people), small-group (up to 10) or standard (up to 30). Reviewers of the big groups mention waiting at stops. Pickup is free on some listings only for hotels in Nungwi, Kendwa and Kidoti; elsewhere the operator arranges a driver at extra cost. Expect to be contacted on WhatsApp after booking to confirm your hotel.
Ride slowly through villages and keep to the guide's pace; dust and noise are hard on the people who live there.
Jet ski in Nungwi and Kendwa
Jet ski rentals run from the beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa, usually for 15, 30 or 60 minutes after a safety briefing, with life jackets provided. Some add a drone that films the first part of your ride and sends edited clips within one or two days. Longer guided rides go out past Tumbatu Island, and a few operators sell jet ski "safaris" to Mnemba at a much higher price. Rides are cancelled or moved in rough weather, with a refund if they cannot go ahead.
Kitesurfing in Paje
Paje, on the east coast, is Zanzibar's kite centre: a wide, shallow lagoon behind the reef, with several schools along the beach. Lessons run about 2 hours, private or with two students per instructor. Check that the school's instructors are certified (IKO or VDWS are the common systems) and that the lesson includes all equipment.
Two things decide your days on the water:
- Wind. The north-east Kaskazi blows from about mid-December to March, and the stronger south-east Kusi from about June to October. April–May, the long rains, and late October to early December often bring days without enough wind.
- Tide. At low tide the inner lagoon empties and beginners move to the outer lagoon or wait. A good wind forecast at the wrong tide can mean no water to ride on, so plan lessons with the school around the tide table.
Horse riding on the beach
Beach rides are short: about 30 minutes in the saddle, plus a transfer to the stable and a briefing. Some include a swim with the horse, which depends on the tide and the wind, so book a few days ahead and let the operator set the time. Read the limits first. One operator does not take riders over 85 kg, and rides are not offered to pregnant women or people with back problems. Per minute, it is one of the most expensive activities on the island, so choose it for the experience, not the distance covered.
