How a Kizimkazi dolphin trip works
Kizimkazi is a fishing village on the south-west tip of Unguja, about an hour by road from many hotels. Dolphin trips leave early, soon after sunrise. You board a small motorboat on the beach, ride out for around half an hour and spend up to two hours looking for dolphins in the waters off the village.
When a group is found, the boat slows down near them. If the dolphins stay, the guide may let you slip into the water with mask and snorkel to watch them pass. Many trips then add a snorkelling stop on a reef, and full-day versions add a barbecue lunch. Back on land, Kizimkazi also has the Salaam Cave, where you can swim with sea turtles in a cave pool; many tours combine the two.
What research says about the boats
Dolphin tourism off Kizimkazi has been studied. A 2010 study in the journal Endangered Species Research compared the behaviour of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins off Zanzibar's south coast with and without tourist boats nearby. With boats present, the dolphins spent less time resting, feeding and socialising and more time travelling. The authors concluded that the level of tourism at the time affected the dolphins' overall behaviour budget and that regulation was urgently needed.
In practice, the trips that do the least harm share a few habits:
- Small boats, and few of them. A boat that moves off when others crowd a group is a good sign.
- No chasing or cutting across the dolphins' path, and engines slow or idling near them.
- Guests enter the water quietly and stay on the surface; the dolphins decide how close they come.
- No touching, feeding or diving down towards the animals.
You can choose to watch from the boat. Ask the operator about these points before you pay; some listings state them as policy.
Kizimkazi or Mnemba
| Kizimkazi | Mnemba | |
|---|---|---|
| Coast | South-west tip | North-east, off Matemwe |
| Main draw | Dolphins | Reef snorkelling, dolphins, sandbank |
| Trip length | ≈ 2–4 h, early | ≈ 3.5–5 h, morning |
| Combine with | Salaam Cave turtles, Jozani Forest | Kendwa or Nungwi beach afternoon |
| Crowding | Many boats can work the same groups | Busy later in the morning |
If you stay in Paje, Jambiani or Michamvi, Kizimkazi is the closer trip and fits well with Jozani Forest. If you stay in the north, Mnemba is closer and adds reef snorkelling.
Practical tips
Book the earliest slot available and confirm the pickup time the evening before. Full-day versions with snorkelling and a beach barbecue last about six and a half hours including the drive; if you combine the dolphins with Salaam Cave or Jozani, the boat goes first and the land stops follow. Bring swimwear, a towel, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen; take seasickness tablets if you need them, as the boats are small. Check whether the listing includes the boat and entry fees or expects cash on the beach. If the sea is rough or no dolphins appear, a good operator will tell you honestly rather than chase the nearest group of boats.
