In short

A guided Stone Town walk takes 2–3 hours on foot and covers the former slave market at the Anglican cathedral, Darajani market, the seafront fort and palaces, and the house where Freddie Mercury grew up. Go in the morning for the markets or in the evening for a food walk that ends at Forodhani Gardens, and check which entry tickets the price covers.

How the day runs

  1. Hotel pickup in Stone Town, or meet the guide in front of the Old Fort

  2. Darajani Market: fruit, vegetable and spice stalls at their busiest

  3. One drink on a restaurant terrace with a view over the old town

  4. Walk through the lanes and squares where people meet for tea, games and football

  5. Forodhani Gardens night market: Zanzibar pizza, urojo soup, shawarma, spice tea

  6. Tour ends; transfer back to your hotel

Typical itinerary from Stonetown: Dinner, Food Markets & Street Food Walking Tour (GetYourGuide). Times shift with flights, tides and weather.

What a Stone Town walk covers

Stone Town (Mji Mkongwe) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a Swahili trading town of coral-stone houses, carved double doors and lanes too narrow for cars, and hard to find your way around without help. The usual 2–3 hour guided loop includes:

  • Christ Church Anglican Cathedral, built on the site of the last slave market. The site has an exhibit on the East African slave trade and preserved underground chambers, and it is the stop most visitors remember.
  • Darajani Market, the main food market: fish, meat, fruit and spice stalls. It is busiest in the morning and again in the early evening.
  • The seafront: the Old Fort, the House of Wonders (Beit el-Ajaib) and the Sultan's Palace. Part of the House of Wonders collapsed in December 2020 while it was being restored, so you see it only from outside.
  • Shangani, with the house where Freddie Mercury grew up, now the Freddie Mercury Museum.
  • Smaller stops, depending on the guide: St Joseph's Catholic Cathedral, Tippu Tip's house, the Hamamni Persian baths, a coffee house and souvenir shops.

Morning walk, food walk or full day

Version Length Best time Usually included Suits
Classic walking tour 2–3 h Morning or late afternoon Guide, water; entries vary Most visitors
Freddie Mercury walk 2–4 h Daytime Museum ticket on some listings Queen fans
Evening food walk ≈ 3 h From ≈ 18:00 Market visit, a drink, dishes at Forodhani Food lovers, first evening
Walk with shopping and night market 5–6 h Afternoon into evening Dinner on some listings People who stay outside town
Stone Town + spice farm + Prison Island Full day From the morning Lunch, boat, some tickets One-day visitors

Private walks cost little more than shared ones on most listings, so a private guide is the normal choice for couples and families. If you want the spice farm or Prison Island as well, a combined day saves a second transfer from the beach.

What "included" means for entry tickets

The guide's fee is almost always included. The tickets are what varies. One morning walk on Headout lists the slave market ticket as excluded. The night food walk on the same platform includes it. Some GYG walks include the Freddie Mercury Museum ticket. Others only stop outside the house.

The two sites with their own charges are the cathedral on the former slave market site and the Freddie Mercury Museum (see the fee card). Museums along the route, such as the Palace Museum, charge separately when a listing visits them. Bring small US dollar notes or Tanzanian shillings for entries the listing does not cover. The cathedral is still used for services and events, so check the day if the slave market is the main reason for your visit.

Timing, dress and where it starts

Most walks start at the Old Fort on the seafront, or at your hotel if you stay in town. Midday is hot in the lanes, so book a morning or late-afternoon start and keep the evening for Forodhani. If you come from Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje or Jambiani, add 1–1.5 hours of driving each way, and consider a sunset dhow from the Stone Town seafront to make the trip worth it.

Dress for a conservative Muslim town: shoulders and knees covered, for men and for women. Ask before you photograph people, especially in the market. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority puts the long rains in March–May and the short rains in October–December. Walks still run in the rain, but the lanes get slippery, so wear shoes with grip.

Stone Town is also close to the airport and the ferry port. A walk fits well on an arrival or departure day: see airport transfers and the Dar ferry.

Questions people ask

How long is a Stone Town walking tour?
Most walks last 2–3 hours. Versions with shopping time, museum visits or the night market run 4–6 hours, and hotel transfers from the north or east coast add about 1–1.5 hours each way.
Are entry fees included in a Stone Town tour?
Often not. The Anglican diocese lists US$5 for adults to visit the cathedral on the former slave market site, and the Freddie Mercury Museum lists US$8 for adults and US$6 for children under 12. Some tour listings quote a higher figure for the slave market site, so check the 'not included' line of your listing.
What should I wear in Stone Town?
Cover your shoulders and knees, and keep swimwear for the beach and the hotel. Zanzibar's tourism authorities have warned that visitors who dress indecently in public can be fined.
When is the Freddie Mercury Museum open?
The museum lists daily opening from 09:00 to 20:00. It is in Mercury House on Shangani Street, and some walks include the ticket while others only stop outside.
Can I visit the Anglican cathedral at any time?
No. The cathedral is still used for services and events, so all or part of it can be closed to visitors. The diocese asks visitors to check with its office before going.
Do tours run during Ramadan?
Yes. Be discreet about eating, drinking and smoking in the street during daylight, and dress more conservatively than usual.
