In short

For a honeymoon, plan 4–6 nights on safari in a private vehicle, then 5–7 nights on Zanzibar, so the trip ends with rest rather than 05:00 game drives. With less time, stay on the island and add a private 2-day fly-in safari to Mikumi or the Serengeti.

Three honeymoon shapes that work

Length Safari Zanzibar How it runs
10 days 4 nights, northern parks (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti) 5 nights, one beach hotel Arrive on the mainland, fly to Zanzibar after the safari
12 days 5 nights, northern parks 1 night Stone Town + 5 nights beach Same, with an evening in the old town
14 days 6 nights: north, or north + a fly-in to Nyerere 7 nights, one or two beach hotels Slowest pace; room for a rest day on safari

If you would rather not land on the mainland at all, fly straight to Zanzibar and take a private 2-day fly-in safari from the island: Mikumi with a night at a lodge inside the park, or the Serengeti with a night by the park gate. Two days of flying gives you about one full day of game drives, so it is a taste rather than a full safari. Compare these on 2–3 day safaris from Zanzibar and Serengeti from Zanzibar.

Pacing after a long flight

Game drives start early, often at sunrise, and the best light ends by mid-morning. That is fine in the first week and hard after ten days of late dinners, so put the safari first. Leave the first evening free: if you land in the afternoon, don't book a game drive the same day.

Keep hotel changes low. On a 10-day trip, two safari lodges and one beach hotel is plenty. Every move between parks is a half day in the vehicle, and every move to or from Zanzibar is a light-aircraft flight with a luggage limit of 15–20 kg per person including hand luggage. Pack the safari part in one soft bag each.

Plan one buffer night in Zanzibar before your flight home. Small-plane schedules change, and some routes run only when enough seats are booked.

Private safari: what changes

On a private safari the vehicle and guide are yours. You decide whether to wait an hour at a lion sighting or move on, when to stop for photos and when to go back to the lodge for the afternoon. On a shared vehicle those choices are made by the group. For couples, private is also where the price difference is smallest relative to the experience, because many lodge and flight costs are per person anyway. One exception: Ngorongoro's crater service fee is charged per vehicle, so a private crater day costs more per person than a shared one.

The Zanzibar part

Choose the coast by tides. The north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) keeps water for swimming most of the day. On the east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi) the lagoon empties at low tide, which is beautiful for walks but means planning swims around the tide times.

Three easy additions for a couple: a sunset dhow cruise, a snorkelling day at Mnemba Atoll, and an evening walk in Stone Town. In Stone Town and villages, dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered.

Booking it

Few complete honeymoon packages are sold on our partner platforms. The bookable options here are a private 4-day Serengeti fly-in from Zanzibar, a private 2-day Mikumi fly-in, and a 9-day Nyerere + beach package with flights, meals and park fees included. For a full northern-circuit honeymoon, combine a safari with your own beach hotel, using the planner on Tanzania safari and Zanzibar.

Zanzibar entry: mandatory travel insurance and Tanzania visa

Zanzibar inbound travel insurance, adultforeign visitor, per person, per trip (max 92 days)US$441
Zanzibar inbound travel insurance, childper child; the source does not define the child age bandUS$221
Zanzibar inbound travel insurance, SADC/EAC travellertravellers from SADC and EAC member statesUS$221
Tanzania visa (Zanzibar), Ordinary single entrytourists of most visa-requiring nationalities; valid up to 90 daysUS$502
Tanzania visa (Zanzibar), Multiple entry for US citizensUSA passport holders visiting for tourism (they cannot get the Ordinary visa); valid 1 year, max 90 days per stayUS$1003
  • Who must buy the insurance. Compulsory for every foreign visitor entering Zanzibar, even if you already hold your own travel or medical insurance. Only a Zanzibar Insurance Corporation policy counts.4
  • What the insurance covers. Emergency medical expenses, medical and body repatriation, personal accident, baggage delay, theft and loss, legal expenses and personal liability. The basic plan excludes terrorism.5
  • How long the insurance lasts. Valid inside Tanzania for up to 92 consecutive days, per the dates on the policy certificate. It cannot be renewed: stay longer and you buy a new policy.6
  • Since when. Mandatory for all foreign visitors to Zanzibar since 1 October 2024.7
  • Where to buy the insurance. Online at inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz, which the insurer calls the only official website for it.8
  • Arriving via Dar es Salaam or the mainland. Mainland Tanzania also requires inbound travel insurance from 1 October 2026. Your first point of entry decides the insurer: Zanzibar first means ZIC (inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz); the mainland first means the National Insurance Corporation (inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz). One valid policy covers both, so you don't pay twice.9
  • Visa: online or on arrival. Get the visa online through Tanzania Immigration Services (visa.immigration.go.tz, linked from immigration.go.tz) or on arrival at an official entry point. Immigration recommends applying online.10
  • Visa: one visa for mainland and Zanzibar. Pick your first destination on the form; the same visa lets you visit both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.11
  • Who needs no visa. Citizens of EAC countries, SADC countries (except Comoros) and Commonwealth countries, except the UK, Canada, Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand.12
  • Zanzibar airport. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (AAKIA), run by the Zanzibar Airports Authority.13

Questions people ask

Is a safari and Zanzibar a good honeymoon?
Yes, if you pace it: safari first while you have energy for early starts, then a week on the beach. Most of the stress comes from too many hotel changes, so keep it to two or three bases.
How many days do we need?
Ten days is a comfortable minimum for a northern safari plus beach; 12–14 days lets you add a night in Stone Town or a third park without rushing.
Private or shared safari?
Private for most couples: you choose when to stop, how long to wait at a sighting and when to head back to the lodge. On a shared vehicle the group decides.
When is the best time?
Avoid the long rains, ≈ March–May, when some safari flights to Nyerere stop and the beach is wet. TANAPA names June–October for the Serengeti migration.
Which part of Zanzibar suits a honeymoon?
The north (Nungwi, Kendwa) has more swimming at all tides; the east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi) has wide lagoons that empty at low tide. Choose by how much you will swim.
Do we need cash?
Bring some US dollars: several safari listings exclude a small per-night lodge levy that is paid in cash at check-in, and tips are not included.
