Jozani: the red colobus walk
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park covers about 50 km² in the south-centre of Unguja. It is the island's only national park. Its best-known residents are the Zanzibar red colobus, a monkey found only on Unguja and classified as endangered.
The visit is a guided walk on forest trails, about 2 hours with stops. The guide leads you to a colobus group, where you can watch the monkeys feed and move through the trees at close range. A separate wooden boardwalk runs through the mangroves, where you can spot crabs and small fish in the water below. Bring insect repellent and closed shoes, and go in the morning if you can, when it is cooler.
Kuza Cave and The Rock
Kuza Cave is a freshwater pool in a cave near Jambiani, reached by a five-minute path through a small patch of jungle. You can swim in the clear water, which is up to 3 metres deep, and the centre adds a display on Swahili history. The cave is open daily from 08:30 to 18:30 and takes a maximum of 20 people at a time, so you may wait in busy periods. Water shoes help on the rocks. You can hire them on site.
The Rock is a restaurant built on a rock off Michamvi Pingwe beach. At low tide you walk across the sand. At high tide a boat takes you over, and landings can be delayed by up to 20 minutes in rough conditions. It serves Zanzibari ingredients with Italian cooking, and it is not a cheap lunch. Many tours stop only for photos and leave lunch to you, so book a sitting directly if eating there is part of the plan.
Which south-east combo to choose
| Combo | Stops | Length | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jozani + Salaam Cave | Forest walk, turtle pool in Kizimkazi | 4.5–7 h | Entry fees in some options; swimming with turtles |
| Jozani, Kuza Cave, Paje, The Rock | Forest, cave swim, beach, restaurant | ≈ 7–7.5 h | Lunch at The Rock not included |
| Jozani + spice farm (+ Stone Town) | Forest, spice farm, old town | 6–9 h | Long day if you stay in the north |
| Kuza Cave, Mtende beach, The Rock | Cave, beach, restaurant | ≈ 4–5 h | No Jozani |
| The Rock with transfer | Reserved table, round trip | ≈ 2.5 h | Choose lunch or dinner sitting |
Tour length depends mostly on where you are picked up. One operator times the Jozani and Salaam Cave tour at about 4.5 hours from Paje, Jambiani or Michamvi, 5–6 hours from Stone Town and 6–7 hours from Nungwi or Kendwa. If you stay in the north, this is a long day in the car; if you stay on the south-east coast, it is an easy half-day.
For dolphins at Kizimkazi, see the Kizimkazi dolphin tour. For a boat day nearby, the Blue Lagoon and starfish trips leave from the same coast.
Tides and timing
The east coast lagoon at Paje, Jambiani and Michamvi empties at low tide and fills at high tide. That changes how The Rock looks: a rock standing on sand, or a restaurant surrounded by sea. If photos matter, check the tide table and ask the operator to plan the order of stops around it. Plan to see Jozani first, while it is cool, and keep Kuza Cave for the warm middle of the day.
The Tanzania Meteorological Authority puts the long rains in March–May and the short rains in October–December. Forest trails get muddy then, so wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty.
