How booking platforms work in Zanzibar
None of the big platforms runs tours in Zanzibar. GetYourGuide describes itself as the "commercial agent" of the supplier. Viator calls itself a "disclosed agent". Headout says it is a marketplace and that your contract is formed directly with the supplier. In every case, the company that collects you, sails the dhow or flies you to Mikumi is a local business. Its name is on the listing and the voucher.
What the platform adds is the paperwork around the trip: a fixed price, card payment, a written itinerary, a cancellation deadline, reviews and a support desk. GetYourGuide's terms are open about the trade-off. The price includes its commission, it can be higher than the supplier charges through other channels, and commission is one of the factors in how listings are ranked.

Our partners are GetYourGuide and Headout, and the trip pages on this site list their products. We describe the others so you can compare, not as booking options.
GetYourGuide
GetYourGuide has the deepest Zanzibar range. Its best-selling Mikumi, Nyerere and Mnemba trips each carry about 1,500–3,200 reviews, and its terms allow reviews only of activities the reviewer bought. Unless a listing says otherwise, cancelling more than 24 hours before the start gets a full refund; inside 24 hours, or if you don't show, there is no refund. Deadlines run on the supplier's time zone. On some trips you can reserve with a card and be charged 72 hours before. If a supplier cancels because of weather, the price is refunded.
Headout
Headout's Zanzibar catalogue is a few dozen products, mainly fly-in safaris, Serengeti trips, safari-and-beach packages, Stone Town and transfers. Cancellation follows the supplier's policy shown on the listing. Headout passes on refunds once the supplier has paid them, normally within seven days. Its Headout Promise offers a rebooking or a refund if the supplier cancels or a promised inclusion is missing, as long as you report it within 24 hours. Weather is not covered.
Viator, TourRadar and SafariBookings
Viator works much like GetYourGuide: you pay the full price by card, and the standard cancellation deadline is 24 hours before. Many Zanzibar suppliers list the same trip on both. TourRadar sells multi-day package tours. The operator confirms within 24–72 hours and its own payment and cancellation terms apply, while EEA and UK travellers get EU package-travel rights. SafariBookings is a directory. You send quote requests, then deal and pay directly with the operator, and its tour pages say the tour is offered by the operator, not by SafariBookings.
Booking a local agency directly
You may pay less and can ask for changes, but your only terms are the agency's own. Check the agency on ZATO's member list (see Zanzibar tour operators), get the itinerary, inclusions and cancellation terms in writing, and keep a receipt. For named brands such as Safari Blue, see how to tell the original from the copies. For tailor-made mainland safaris, see the fly-in safari specialists.
